Winter-to-Spring: How to Keep Your Skin Calm and Clear from Spring Allergies 🌸

Ahhh another change in seasons! And while we do welcome Spring and Summer with open arms in Australia, this next change in season has potential to welcome a new round of skin issues (yey). The combo of warmer weather, pollen floating in the air, and longer days in the sun can send your skin into overdrive = congestion, flare-ups, redness, you name it. So let’s break down how to keep your skin calm, clear, and happy as the seasons shift again.

Why the Winter-to-Spring Change Messes with Skin

The transition from winter to spring is one of the trickiest seasonal changes for skin. Why? Because:

  • In winter, we tend to pile on richer, lipid-heavy products to protect against dryness.

  • As the weather warms, your sebaceous glands naturally relax and produce more oil.

  • Add those two together = congestion city if you don’t adjust your routine.

Just like swapping your winter coat for a linen shirt, your skin may need a wardrobe refresh too.

Allergies + Skin: The Hidden Connection

Spring means pollens, dust, and histamine triggers for some, which can make existing inflammatory conditions like dermatitis, hayfever, perioral dermatitis, and psoriasis flare up. If you’re prone to redness or itchiness, you’re not imagining things — your skin is literally reacting to the air.

What helps?

  • Keep it nurturing, not stimulating → Focus on soothing, barrier-supporting products rather than piling on actives.

  • Consider low-dose antihistamines (chat with your GP first).

  • Clinical LED therapy → Calms inflammation and gives your skin a chance to reset.

  • Diet support → Collagen supplements, probiotics, and low-histamine diets can all help keep your skin in check from the inside out.

Ingredients to Love This Season

  • Hyaluronic Acid → Think water hydration, not oils.

  • Peptides → Support skin repair while keeping things calm. Peptides are like little messengers that tell your skin cells to get to work, aka boosting repair, firmness, and overall skin strength.

  • Gentle exfoliation → Once in a while, not daily. Please don’t dive head-first into peels just because you’re “done with dry winter skin.”

Skin Nerd Favourites This Time of Year

Personally, I love adding in:

  • An Omega Complex → Better communication between cells = smoother, healthier oil production.

  • Vitamin D (safely!) → A little sunshine boost can do wonders for mood and skin health after winter.

As always, no matter the time of year or season, your key foundation step in your skincare routine is ensuring you're nailing a proper cleanse every morning and night. This means a gentle cleanser that works for your skin type, and removal with The Cleansing Cloth - ✋🏻please, no bacteria filled face washers, no chemical based makeup wipes, and skip the splash removal. Period. 👏🏻

Makeup + SPF Reapplication

If you're a skincare nerd like myself, you will know all about the importance of using daily SPF not only for sun protection, but for anti-aging as well as supporting our skin barrier with our use of actives in our skincare products. You will (hopefully) also know we are only protected by our SPF for 2-3 hours after every application. So what does that mean for those who wear make up everyday? Reapplying your sunscreen over a full glam look is...not ideal.
