Let me De-Influence You - Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is now being hailed as the secret to “glass skin”? No. Just no.
Let’s get straight to the point: dermaplaning is not the skincare miracle it’s been marketed to be. In fact, the only real miracle here is how brilliantly this product was branded. Whoever managed to take “shaving your face” and turn it into a luxurious-sounding skincare treatment deserves an award in marketing - because that’s exactly what dermaplaning is: shaving your face.
It’s not high-tech.
It’s not skin science.
It’s not new.
It’s a blade. That’s it. Just a blade in a slightly different shape.
Whether it's the razor your partner uses to shave their beard, or the one you use on your legs, it all does the same thing - removes hair and dead skin cells, blunts the hair, and guarantees stubble will follow.
And yet, dermaplaning is now being hailed as the secret to “glass skin”? No. Just no.
Blunting your facial hair, which causes it to grow back thicker and coarser over time.
Disrupting your skin barrier, especially when done repeatedly.
Triggering a cycle the more you shave, the more you have to keep shaving to maintain that artificially smooth feeling.
Thickening your skin as a protective response to ongoing trauma. This isn’t regeneration. It’s stress.
Let’s be honest, it’s hit the peri-menopausal market hard. At a time when skin becomes more delicate, more reactive, and more in need of support, not stress, dermaplaning swoops in and sells a temporary fix at the cost of long-term skin health.
It’s packaged as self-care, but in reality, it’s more often a panic purchase: a last-ditch attempt to stay smooth, youthful, and flawless in a world obsessed with filters and unrealistic skin standards.
As someone who lives and breathes skin science, let me tell you this trend is doing more harm than good!
That perfectly smooth, flawless, poreless “glass skin” you’re chasing? It’s a filter! It’s not real. And even if it were, it’s not the goal. Healthy skin isn’t texture-free. It has pores, fine lines, hair, and variation. That’s normal. That’s real.
If you hear nothing else, hear this: Please stop dermaplaning.
Or better yet, never start.
Your skin deserves nourishment, not constant shaving. Let’s stop feeding this cycle of over-exfoliation, over-sensitization, and unrealistic beauty standards. Trends fade. Your skin is with you for life.
Respect it. Protect it. Don’t scrape it.

Ahhh another change in seasons! And while we do welcome Spring and Summer with open arms in Australia, this next change in season has potential to welcome a new round of skin issues (yey). The combo of warmer weather, pollen floating in the air, and longer days in the sun can send your skin into overdrive = congestion, flare-ups, redness, you name it. So let’s break down how to keep your skin calm, clear, and happy as the seasons shift again.
If you're a skincare nerd like myself, you will know all about the importance of using daily SPF not only for sun protection, but for anti-aging as well as supporting our skin barrier with our use of actives in our skincare products. You will (hopefully) also know we are only protected by our SPF for 2-3 hours after every application. So what does that mean for those who wear make up everyday? Reapplying your sunscreen over a full glam look is...not ideal.
